Movement & Nature
Whether you love cycling or hiking, Limburg welcomes you with endless greenery. The landscape is wonderfully diverse – from the Voer region and the Maas valley, to the ponds of the Wijers, the wooded areas, and the vast Kempen heathlands.
Step into a living museum of nature: the Arboretum of Bokrijk. Spread over 18 hectares, it is Belgium’s largest collection of plants, trees, and shrubs. Open every day and free of charge, the Arboretum is worth visiting in every season. A 2 km signposted walking trail guides you past its most enchanting highlights.
The Bolderberg estate stretches from the Teut in Zonhoven, past the Platwijers ponds, and into the Kempen. This large nature reserve is a paradise for walkers and cyclists. Fun fact: the Bolderberg hill is also the site where the Zolder race circuit was built.
Discover the Holsteen, a cluster of massive sandstone boulders. Prehistoric farmers once used one of these stones to polish their flint axes – a unique relic of Limburg’s earliest visitors. Today, it remains Zonhoven’s only permanent witness to prehistoric life, with tools also found at five other local sites.
Tree frogs, bitterns, and herons all make their home in the Platwijers. Whether you spot them is a matter of luck – but one thing is certain: this is a magical pond walk at the heart of De Wijers. Watch the hidden wildlife from one of three bird hides along the route, or climb the lookout tower for sweeping views over the patchwork of ponds.
Welcome to the land of 1,001 ponds. De Wijers is a paradise for nature lovers, filled with rare plants, unique birdlife, and dazzling landscapes. The ponds form a breathtaking backdrop for cycling or hiking – a true immersion in Limburg’s natural heritage.
Reading Between the Lines, known locally as the “see-through church,” is a striking architectural installation designed in 2011 by Gijs Van Vaerenbergh. Built from horizontal steel plates, it offers a different perspective from every angle.
In Bosland National Park, you can enjoy a cycling adventure unlike any other: ride a winding path that gradually lifts you up to ten meters above the ground, bringing you eye-to-eye with the treetops. Opened in 2019, this unique experience is not to be missed.
In Bokrijk, cycle straight through a pond along a 200-meter-long path. Since opening in 2016, this extraordinary experience has enchanted both cyclists and walkers who come to feel the magic of gliding across the water’s surface.
South Limburg is often called the “Tuscany of the North” – and for good reason. Rolling hills, blooming orchards, and tranquil stream valleys define this stunning region. Traces of its rich past are everywhere: Roman burial mounds, ancient roads, Romanesque chapels, stately castles, and traditional farmsteads.
Between Stevoort and Kermt lies the historic Herkenrode Forest. Once owned by the Abbey of Herkenrode, this 180-hectare woodland – once called Grotenbos – was used for cattle grazing. Today it offers peaceful trails where history and nature meet.
Marvel at Flanders’ most breathtaking panorama. In the Hoge Kempen National Park, you’ll wander through purple heathlands, golden sand dunes, endless pine forests, and glittering pools. The skyline is dotted with mining relics, reminders of Limburg’s proud industrial past.

For kids, Kiewit’s children’s farm is an unforgettable experience. Rabbits, guinea pigs, and chickens fill the barns, while goats, sheep, donkeys, and a horse graze outside. Pigs play in the mud pools, and nearby nature reserves are grazed by sturdy Galloway cattle.
The Mombeek stream rises in Widooie, once a vital Roman water source. Romans led its waters into Tongeren via an aqueduct across an artificial hill – now known as Beukenberg. Today, the Mombeek offers tranquil walks rich in history.
