- What is the Begijnhof Project?
The Begijnhof site in Hasselt is being redeveloped and repurposed. Key stakeholders include the Province of Limburg, the city of Hasselt, and Hasselt University. The project design is led by Bovenbouw Architectuur in collaboration with David Kohn Architects from London. The goal is to make the Begijnhof more accessible, functional, and integrated as a public space, while preserving its tranquility, heritage value, and overall experience. - What does the “new entrance” involve?
In addition to the existing historical entrance through the gatehouse, a second opening will be created in the wall along Witte Nonnenstraat. This new entrance will connect to a pathway through the Begijnhof garden, allowing easier access to the garden from the city without always having to use the main gate, thereby improving accessibility. - Other renovation plans & features
- A reflecting pool will be installed in the church ruins, mirroring the former church.
- A 26-meter-high observation tower will provide panoramic views over the city.
- The Begijnhof houses will be restored, with some converted for temporary accommodation (e.g., for students or visiting lecturers).
