FARMERS’ WAR

- FARMERS’ WAR (BOERENKRIJG)
- A monument commemorating the Boerenkrijg (Farmers’ War) of 1798, erected in 1898 on Leopold Square (formerly Scherder Tower).
- Designed by Jan Frans De Vriendt and Alfons Baggen, it depicts a farmer holding a banner and ox horn, surrounded by fighting and suffering peasants.
- The monument symbolizes the resistance of Flemish farmers against the French occupation; over 600 people died in the region.
- An annual commemoration takes place on December 5 at the Chapel of Hilst, the oldest monument in Limburg dedicated to the Farmers’ War.
