DOKTOR WILLEMS

- DOCTOR WILLEMS
- The statue of Dr. Louis Willems is located on the Groene Boulevard in Hasselt, near the Provincial Library. It was inaugurated on 12 May 2000 in honor of Hasselt physician Louis Willems (1822–1907), who is considered one of the founders of bacteriology and immunology. He is best known for developing a vaccine against bovine lung plague, a major contribution to public health and the local economy, as livestock farming in the region was closely linked to jenever production.
- The four-meter-high artwork, designed by artist Luc Steegen, is made of steel and bronze. It depicts Dr. Willems in a dignified posture, gazing toward the horizon, symbolizing his scientific vision and dedication. The statue was funded with support from the Rotary Hasselt-Herkenrode.
- The statue is located near the Jenever Museum, emphasizing the historical and cultural significance of Dr. Willems for the city.
