THE LITLE SPECULAAS MAN

- THE LITLE SPECULAAS MAN
- The Speculaas Man in Hasselt is a bronze statue unveiled in 1986 to mark the 70th anniversary of the Royal Association of Bakers and Confectioners of Hasselt. The statue was designed by Limburg artist Kristien Praet and is located on Witte Nonnenstraat, near the Jenever Museum.
- The statue symbolizes the famous Hasselt speculaas, a treat dating back to the late 14th century. According to tradition, speculaas was invented either by baker Lieben or by Jozef Antoon Deplée, who was also a liquor distiller. The name “speculaas” is said to come from the word “speculeren,” meaning “to reflect” or “to invent.”
- The Speculaas Man is one of many statues in Hasselt, each reflecting a piece of the city’s rich history and culture.
