KIOSK BY THE WATER

- KIOSK BY THE WATER
- The new kiosk at the head of the Kanaalkom in Hasselt is a striking feature of the area’s redevelopment. This transformation turned a former concrete parking lot into a green meeting place overlooking the water. The kiosk, topped with a green roof, was designed for small events such as music performances and markets, and serves as an important link between the city and the canal.
- In addition to the kiosk, the redesign includes a grassy slope with a height difference of about four meters, functioning as an amphitheater with long wooden benches and a slide for children. An asymmetrical staircase connects the quay with the higher Verbindingsplein and houses underground rainwater tanks that supply water to the surrounding greenery. In total, 1,400 m² of pavement was removed, and 18 new trees were planted, including glossy oaks, false elms, and honey locusts.
- This redevelopment is part of the larger “Blauwe Boulevard” project, which is transforming the Kanaalkom into a vibrant and green urban space. The kiosk plays a central role as a venue for culture and social gatherings, contributing to Hasselt’s appeal as an experience-oriented city.
