THE OLD HOSPITAL

- THE OLD HOSPITAL
- The Oud Gasthuis at Thonissenlaan 75 in Hasselt is a historic building with a rich past. It was founded in 1626 by Pastor Herman van der Ryst, who invited three Grey Sisters from Diest to settle in Hasselt. Its original purpose was to care for plague victims. In 1663, construction began on a new hospital in Neo-Renaissance style, which was further expanded and enclosed by walls between 1666 and 1683.
- In the 19th century, the building was transformed into a hospital complex. In 1995, it was renovated and converted into a modern office building, while preserving the historic façade. The renovation was led by the renowned Italian architect Aldo Rossi, in collaboration with the architectural firm De Gregorio & Partners.
- The Oud Gasthuis is located on Hasselt’s Groene Boulevard, opposite the Quartier Bleu, and is easily accessible by public transport and car. The building is an example of how historical heritage can be successfully integrated into modern urban development.
