THE OLD TOWN HALL

- THE OLD TOWN HALL
- “Den Nieuwen Bauw” (“The New Building”) is the original name of what is now known as the Old Town Hall of Hasselt.
- It was originally built as a private mansion in the third quarter of the 17th century (by H. Vanderstraeten) and was later remodeled.
- When the city of Hasselt purchased the property in 1779, it served as a replacement for the old town hall on the Havermarkt, which had become dilapidated.
- In 1780, the building was redesigned in a late-classicist style, characterized by greater symmetry and classical ornamentation.
- Here are some notable artworks and interior features in the Old Town Hall:
- Painting by Nicolaes van Galen
One of the highlights is a painting by Nicolaes van Galen, dating from 1657. It depicts the Judgment of Count William the Good, who orders the beheading of his unfaithful bailiff — intended as a reminder of justice and good governance. - Exhibitions
